Dreams of Spring
We are not friends, winter and I.
Nor are we enemies, lovers, or family.
Biting cold, treacherous ice,
Numbing winds, soul-eating darkness.
I hide from you, ignore you.
Dreaming of warm tomorrows,
Filled with blooming flowers,
Green grasses, and singing birds.
Far from winter’s darkness,
Where the sun’s light holds me,
Welcoming glorious spring,
And banishing winter once again.
Don’t walk away, Don’t push me aside. My heart is all I can give you. When you need me, I’ll be here.
I see the pain in your eyes, Hear the stress in your voice. The world is falling apart, You need a safe place to land. Let me catch you.
You don’t need to go through this alone. I want to be your strength. Stop being stubborn. Take my hand. I’m right here…waiting.
I promised I wouldn’t let you in
But here you are
Hiding in my heart
Safe from the pain
The outside world
The stress of war
You’re leaving me
I’ll be alone
I miss you already
But you’ll still be here
Hiding in my heart
No matter how far away
A year apart
So many changes
So many tears
I didn’t want to let you in
But here you are
Hiding in my heart.
A five minute phone call out of the blue Late night for him – so far away Early evening for her – keeping the home fire stoked He misses her “How is everything?” “It’s ok, busy. How’s it going with you?” “It’s going.” He’s concerned about her health – just a cold She tells him something to make him laugh He needed the stress relief War is coming…so soon Only 2 and a half months left together Most of that spent apart Would their friendship survive the distance? Would he care? Would she?
His eyes so blue The playful turn of his smile His smartass remark The gentle, caring hug All she had left Those precious memories
As she closed her eyes And heard him say goodbye again One last message on her voice mail
Their time together so short He'd be back in a month or so Being a soldier came first But she'd be gone Her own destiny to follow Friendship, they promised But she knew better This was goodbye, forever.
Majestic eagle, soaring
Round and round, skyward
Seeing all, watching.
Lone buffalo, grazing
Once king of the herd, magnificent
Past his prime, alone.
Sagebrush and tall grasses, prairie dogs
His only companions, still noble
Beautiful wild horses, new herd
Lone buffalo, accepted
Life on the plains, ever changing.
